This quilt originated in North Carolina and holds strong clues that it is a Southern quilt. The dark, deep colors and the use of black and white quilting thread is very unique. The greenish/teal dye in the sashing has some color variation which may mean it is a home dye that is fugitive.
I do not know the exact pattern name but have lovingly labelled it for this post as ‘Framed Pinwheel’. It has all the old charm you would expect to find in an antique quilt. It has been hand-pieced and hand quilted. The blocks were so beautifully sewn together. The pinwheel size in the center varies by block but the smallest measures 1.75 x 1.75 inches. One small pinwheel was turned incorrectly!
The front was folded to the back and then secured with dark thread by hand.
This quilt measures 71.5 x 89 inches. It is a heavy-weight quilt with cotton batting and a cream cotton backing.
This quilt is in good antique condition. There is fabric wear across a section of the quilt where the batting is exposed. Some dye rot has occurred. The back shows staining, and some dye run from a previous wash. This is a great example of a Southern Quilt. It is a wonderful piece of textile history with some Old World charm!
Please note, every attempt is taken to detail imperfections in photos, descriptions, and video. The nature of this item does lend itself to normal age-related issues and must be taken into consideration before purchasing.
This quilt will be sold as-is. Washing is NOT recommended as the dye will most likely run. Machine washing is not recommended.
