Full Description

This quilt is a stunning example of an antique crazy quilt. One of its endearing features is the hand-painted florals throughout the piece. There is a great patch which depicts a horse with a pioneer rider. The embroidery is excellent and showcases a variety of stitches and motifs with florals as the main element. Many crazy quilts are dated; however, this one contains a simple letter ‘M’ stitched into the quilt.

It is believed that this quilt was framed and back at a later date. It is not quilted through the 3 layers. A few areas of the top show the makers basting stitch that was never secured with an embroidery stitch. Possibly the top wasn’t fully finished but found and completed more recently.

The binding has been stuffed in a trapunto-like fashion. It was machine stitched around the border in a dark purple thread. The back is a dusty purple velvet with a darker purple for the binding.

This quilt measures 46.5 x 64 inches. It is a medium-to-heavy weight quilt with a velvet backing and binding.

This quilt was discovered in Wichita, Kansas and was owned by a long-time dealer and collector. It hung as artwork in a prominent spot of her home.
